A Room Preserved in a Photograph
On October 15, 1931, photographer William A. Fishbaugh documented the interior of the Huntington Soda Shop in Miami. The State Archives of Florida identifies the business, photographer, city, and date. No grand ceremony is necessary to make this a valuable historical moment: the camera preserved an ordinary place where people bought refreshments and participated in neighborhood commerce.
Miami After the Boom
Miami had experienced spectacular growth during the 1920s, followed by a real-estate collapse, devastating hurricane damage, and then the national economic crisis of the Great Depression. A 1931 retail interior therefore belongs to a city working through sharp economic change. It is tempting to read every shop as either thriving or failing, but a single photograph cannot establish a business's finances.
The Social Role of a Soda Shop
Soda fountains and small shops offered more than goods. They were places where customers encountered clerks, neighbors, and the rituals of daily life. Their counters, display cases, and furnishings reveal the material culture of an era. Such details are often absent from political histories, yet they shaped how a city felt to people who lived there.
Reading the Evidence Carefully
The archive identifies what was photographed and when. It does not tell us every customer's name, the shop's daily sales, or the precise conversations that took place. Those details should not be invented. Instead, the photograph invites questions about ownership, employment, advertising, and the changing patterns of Miami street life.
Why It Matters
Florida's history is not made only by governors, soldiers, and storms. A dated image of a modest Miami business can show how residents occupied the spaces between headline events.
